Tutoring Section 2 with Mitchell Hudson
Date/Time: March 15, 2016/ 10:50 a.m.-11:50 a.m.
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: Formal writing rules in English/ paragraph
correction.
Feedback provided to tutee: I practiced three paragraph
corrections. I have learned the difference between it’s (it is), and “its”
which is possessive. Period should be before quotation mark. I have leaned the
expression of “more in-depth look something.” The word “investigation” takes
“of” as a proposition. To occur is time related verb which takes “whenever”
instead of “whatever.” Demise means ‘death.” “The demise of a relative” is a
passive voice. “A relative’s demise” is active voice.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Formal
writing rules in English are very straight forward and important. I shouldn’t
start the sentence with pronoun or conjunction. Another words, I shouldn’t put
“and” or “because” at the beginning of the sentences. I shouldn’t write “don’t.’
I should write like “do not” or “should not” in the formal writing. I should
avoid starting writing in first person.
I should not use symbols. I should not use passive voice.
