I met with Isik at the Hecht House for our fourth tutoring session. We sat outside since it was such a beautiful day. I've realized the more time I spend with Isik, the more I learn from her. She has taught me some great teaching techniques that I plan to use with my future students. For example, she explained the importance of reviewing over material that has already been taught when planning to introduce a similar topic. She described this as the "building blocks" to grasping the content. It is great knowing that we both can benefit from our time together.
I prepared an expository writing exercise for Isik. I explained what expository writing entails, and gave her examples of the different types of expository writing. Unlike last week, I wanted Isik to choose her own topic to write about. Since she is so well-informed about sociology and has a strong passion for it, an expository essay about sociology was the perfect choice. We read the essay aloud, and reviewed over any "beautiful mistakes." I was very impressed with her overall development of the essay!
